Trey Freeman’s buzzer-beater was all the buzz at Old Dominion.
Freeman’s shot heard ’round the world on March 24 sent the Monarchs into the NIT semifinals with a 30-footer with less than a second to play to give them a 72-69 victory over Murray State.
According to Old Dominion’s athletics website ESPN listed the play its No. 1 highlight of the day. The Associated Press story from the game ran on NBC Sports, CBS Sports, FOX Sports and in the New York Daily News, among other media outlets. The video appeared on national sites such as Deadspin, SB Nation and NCAA.com.
“My boys were jumping on me,” Freeman told the Virginian-Pilot. “We were excited because we’re going to New York.”
The Monarchs (28-7), 5-25 only two years ago, lost Tuesday night to Stanford, 67-60, at Madison Square Garden.
The Cardinal, led by Chasson Randle’s game-high 24 points, advanced to play Miami (Fla.), a 60-57 winner over Temple in the other semifinal, in Thursday’s NIT championship game.
