The ASN Eight: Providence tops our inaugural college hockey poll

Ice hockey under the lights

Yes, there are already two college hockey polls for the men, but the new ASN poll trims the list to an elite eight for some fun and a change of pace.

We give the nod to defending national champion Providence as the top-ranked team in the nation. The Friars, who haven’t lost since 2-1 in overtime to New Hampshire, stretching their unbeaten streak to 10-0-1, are also No. 1 in the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.

Boston College, ranked second, is coming off a scoreless sweep of Maine. Providence (6-0-1) was idle last weekend.

A big litmus test for the Friars comes this weekend when it opens its Hockey East schedule with a home-and-home series against rival Boston University. The Terriers (5-3-0, 3-2-0), have won their past three games, a sweep over Northeastern and an overtime win over Denver. Friday’s game, a rematch of last season’s Frozen Four final, will be televised on ASN at 6 p.m. ET.

Boston College hosts Michigan State (4-3-1) in a non-conference game on Friday.
