The ASN Eight: Irish up to No. 5; Quinnipiac stays No. 1

Ice hockey under the lights

It’s not easy being No. 1 or anywhere near the top of a poll these days, but Quinnipiac keeps on trucking.

The Bobcats (19-1-5) had to pull their goalie for an extra attacker in both games last week to run their unbeaten streak to seven games and remain on top of the ASN Eight.

The sixth attackers enabled Quinnipiac to score with 9.1 seconds left against Rensselaer in a 3-3 tie and with 57 second remaining in a 2-2 tie against Maine.

They weren’t the only team living on the edge.

No. 3 North Dakota also needed some late heroics at home last weekend when it escaped Colorado College with a 6-5 shootout victory after seeing a 4-0 lead turn into a 5-4 deficit on Friday night.

It was the first time since 1988 UND had blown a 4-0 lead, but Rhett Gardner’s scrambling backhander with 32 seconds remaining forced overtime and set up UND’s first-ever shootout victory when Brock Boeser scored in the first round of sudden death after the team’s skated to a scoreless 3-on-3 period.

Conferences are tightening up and the gimmes are being left on the golf courses. It also means lots of poll movement.
