Tailgate alert: Monday marks final bowl game for ASN-affiliated FBS teams

Football, remote control, popcorn

If we learned anything from last fall, it’s to expect the unexpected. And lots and lots of fireworks.

A dozen teams in the American Sports Network footprint garnered postseason berths, from Detroit (Central Michigan) to Nassau (Western Michigan and Middle Tennessee State). And don’t forget about ASN’s broadcast and live stream of the inaugural NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl on Dec. 29.

Here’s when to watch — and, more importantly what to watch for — this month:

What this one lacks in sex appeal — the Gophers were one of three 5-7 teams picked to fill bowl slots after all the 6-6 options were exhausted — it more than makes up for in terms of coaching narratives. Chippewas coach John Bonamego conquered a fight with tonsil cancer this season, while Minnesota coach Tracy Claeys had to finish the campaign in the Twin Cities after health problems forced coach Jerry Kill to retire mid-season.

Keep an eye on: Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner. The Gophers’ signal-caller was emblematic of his team’s up-and-down performances this fall. When Leidner completed at least 60 percent of this throws, Minnesota went 4-3. When it was fewer than 60 percent, the Gophs were just 1-4.
