Player of the Week honors cap perfect ending for SBU, Valpo players

Can the Player of the Week be an entire team?

If so give it up to St. Bonaventure’s women, who completed a season for the record books with an undefeated 16-0 run at home, and Valparaiso's men, who won the Horizon League's regular-season championship.

In honor of their teams, the ASN Basketball Players of the Week are St. Bonaventure’s Mariah Ruff and Valparaiso’s Alec Peters.

Ruff made sure her senior classmates went out on a high note in a 60-48 win against Duquesne on Saturday, Senior Day. The sophomore guard posted 18 points and 13 rebounds for her first career double-double. She also had 4 assists and connected on 5 3-pointers.

Ruff tallied 21 points and 7 rebounds in a loss to Fordham earlier in the week and averaged  19.5 points and 10 rebounds on the week.

The Bonnies closed out Atlantic 10 play at 12-4 and 23-6 overall, the second-most regular season wins in program history.

Peters is another prime example of the saying “big time players make big time plays in big time games.”

The 6-9 junior,  averaged 27.5 points and 8.5 rebound in Valpo’s two victories last week.

Last Sunday against Detroit in a 90-74 win, he scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He followed up with a 23-point, 6-rebound performance in a 80-76 win at Milwaukee on Friday.

This season, Peters has scored in double figures in 28 of 30 games and has registered 11 double-doubles. Peters has led Valparaiso to a 26-5 record. The Crusaders are one of only six teams with 25 wins.
