Villanova's John Robertson leads Preseason All-America team

Led by Walter Payton Award winner John Robertson, athletes from ASN affiliated schools dominated the STATS FCS Preseason All-America team announced Thursday.

Robertson, Villanova's 6-1 senior quarterback, is a key reason the Wildcats are on everyone’s preseason watch list. He led the FCS in passer efficiency rating (181.3) as Villanova finished 11-3 overall and 7-1 in CAA Football last year, earning the No. 6 seed for the FCS playoffs and reaching the quarterfinals.

Villanova teammate Don Cherry, a 6-1 senior linebacker who was runner-up last for the Buck Buchanan Award given to FCS's top defensive player, was among 14 players from CAA Football selected to the All-America teams. The Ohio Valley and Southland conferences each had nine selections.

FCS champion North Dakota State had five players named to the squad. Liberty, along with FCS runner-up Illinois State, had the next most with four. The Flames placed wide receiver Darrin Peterson, offensive guard Jonathan Burgess and kicker John Lunsford on the first team. Senior defensive lineman Chima Uzowihe was named to the second team.

Football on ASN will kick off again Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. ET when Southeastern Louisiana travels to Northwestern State.
