Tigers prospect Austin Kubitza following what's around the bend

Former Rice pitcher Austin Kubitza has a problem. The Detroit Tigers minor-leaguer doesn’t throw hard enough to blow one past any hitter. But his problem could be his ticket to the major leagues.

Kubitza, the Tigers’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2014, just can’t throw straight.

"I've been called weird my whole life for not being able to throw the ball straight," he told the Detroit Free Press. "But it's got me this far, so I'm not complaining too much."

While at Rice, Kubitza had two pitches — a four-seam fastball and slider. But after his coach told him to start throwing a two-seamer, it changed everything for Kubitza.
