St. Cloud State, Northeastern forwards earn ASN Hockey Players of the Week

While eight more shutouts were registered in men’s Division I hockey this past week to bring the season total to 47, our ASN Players of the Week lit up the scoreboard for their respective teams.

Senior forward Joey Benik scored five goals and added one assist to lead St. Cloud State (8-2-0, 4-0-0) to a weekend sweep over Western Michigan (6-4-1, 2-4-0) in Kalamazoo. Mich. Benik, who led the Huskies with 16 goals and 23 assists last season, tallied a career-high four goals and an assist in Saturday’s stunning 11-1 rout. His other goal came in Friday’s 5-2 win.

Benik is the first Husky to have a four-goal game since 2002 and leads the team with 49 shots on net, 18 coming against WMU. He has scored four of SCSU’s eight power play goals on the season.

Kendall Coyne, meanwhile, continued her hot hand as the country’s leader in points per game for women’s Division 1 hockey. The senior forward had a six-point weekend for No. 7 Northeastern (10-1-1), which swept Merrimack over the weekend. Coyne extended her point-scoring streak to 11 games (18 goals, 12 assists). In 105 career games, Coyne has 106 goals and 83 assists and Northeastern is a whopping plus-104 goals when she has been on the ice.

Led by Coyne, Northeastern is off to its best start since 2001-2002 (11-1-0) and its best start in conference play since joining Hockey East in 2002.

Next up is a conference showdown Friday night with unbeaten and second-ranked Boston College, followed by a Saturday afternoon game against Vermont.
