Ohio State, Quinnipiac forwards net Player of Week honors
Either way, the ASN Hockey Players of the Week beat out tough crowds for the honor.
For quantity and impact, nobody had a bigger week than Ohio State junior forward Nick Schilkey. The Marysville, Mich., native tallied two goals and an assist in Sunday’s series-sweeping 6-5 overtime win against Michigan. He also had an assist in Friday’s 7-4 series-opening win.
The two losses leave Michigan in a dogfight with Penn State for second place in the Big Ten and a first-round conference bye. Big Blue has lost three of four.
Schilkey is a big reason why.
He leads the Buckeyes (12-17-3) with 19 goals and 20 assists, tied for 24th in the nation. In the past six games he’s tallied six goals and eight assist and over the past three weeks has averaged an NCAA-best 2.33 points per game.
On the flipside, Nicole Brown scored just one goal this past weekend.
But it was a beauty.
The senior forward gave the fourth-ranked Quinnipiac women their first ever ECAC tournament title with a 1-0 win over fifth-ranked Clarkson.
The win caps a season in which the Bobcats also won their first regular-season league title, reached 30 wins for the first time (30-2-5) and sets up a rematch this week in the NCAA Tournament with the Golden Knights.
The goal and the win snapped Clarkson’s 18-game unbeaten streak and drops last year’s league champion to 29-4-5.
