NBA DRAFT DIARY | Oakland's Kay Felder hoping quickness key for his draftability
I’ve worked out for the New Orleans Pelicans, Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavs, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets and Orlando Magic. I have workouts with the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons coming up, and back to the San Antonio Spurs.
I’ve seen a couple guys at different workouts like Yogi (Ferrell, former Indiana guard), A.J. English (former Iona guard), a couple more guys, I’ve definitely seen a lot of familiar faces.
All of my workouts have been going pretty well, I’m enjoying it. In most workouts we’ve been playing one on one, three on three, and two on two, a lot of shooting drills, working on finishes, pick and rolls, going through the team’s sets. I feel good about all of them, there wasn’t a certain one that I felt especially good about. I still feel like I’m still a little under the radar, but I definitely think the buzz is starting to pick up, but I’m still somewhat under the radar.
I think I’m showing that my size doesn’t matter just by being myself, scoring the ball and putting pressure on the defense showing that I can check bigger defenders. My quickness is an advantage — I can crowd them when they bring the ball down low. I can be right there on them.
The NBA game is definitely changing; the rules are definitely way different than they were back then and it’s definitely an advantage to me. Guys liked to use hand checks a lot, and now that’s alleviated some of that’s going away. If you watch the game, there’s still a lot of flopping going on, but they’re trying to get rid of that too.
Watching a guy like Isaiah Thomas gives me a lot of confidence knowing that we’re around the same size and I can do that too. I haven’t met any of those guys (Isaiah Thomas, Nate Robinson) but I’ve had conversations with them on social media, just about normal stuff.
My dad (Khalil Felder Sr.) and my coach (A.W. Canada) are still in my ear, they’re saying really just have fun and try to kill every workout I go to, that’s about it, just enjoy it, they feel like I deserve it. I’ll be home in Detroit with my family on draft day.
I am having fun, having a lot of fun seeing different cities places I haven’t gone before it’s really been amazing.
