Memorials set for Geneseo hockey, women's basketball players

Memorials have been set for the two student-athletes who were stabbed to death in a weekend double murder-suicide near the SUNY-Geneseo campus.

According to a police statement, Colin Kingston, a former student and former boyfriend of Kelsey Annese, killed her and Matthew Hutchinson early Sunday morning before taking his own life.

The school’s athletic page is covered by a giant ribbon with the embedded numbers 23 and 32 — Hutchinson’s hockey number and Annese’s basketball number.

Hutchinson, from North Vancouver, B.C., was a senior defenseman for the Knights hockey team and was a volunteer firefighter/EMT at the Geneseo Fire Department, He was a member of the student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) and spent last summer fighting wildfires with the British Columbia Wildlife Service in the Rockies.

Annese, a senior guard from Webster, NY, majored in childhood with special education and Spanish and minors in psychology.

GoFundMe pages have been set up to help each family cover funeral and travel expenses.

The Geneseo basketball doubleheader against Cortland scheduled for Tuesday night and the men’s hockey road game at Oswego on Friday have been postponed.

Saturday’s home hockey game vs. Cortland is going on as planned and is now a "Pack the Ira” event, a chance to support the team as they rally together to honor their teammate.

Geneseo is a Division III hockey program ranked 12th in the country with a 10-3-3 record. The school has about 5,600 undergraduate students and 98 graduate students.

A remembrance ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kuhl Gymnasium located inside the Merritt Athletic Center and begin at 7 p.m. The memorial will be broadcast live.
