Maya Hawkins, James Kelly give C-USA Player of the Week sweep
James Kelly, Marshall
The 6-7, 255-pound senior, who bench presses 285 pounds, helped the Thundering Herd physically dominate two C-USA opponents last week. He averaged 25.5 points and 15.0 rebounds while shooting 63% from the field, posting two double-doubles. He was also 9 of 9 from the foul line. In Marshall's 90-67 against Florida Atlantic, he scored 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and was 8 of 13 from the floor (62%). Kelly followed that up with a 33-point, 15-rebound performance while hitting 63% of his shots in a 99-81 win against FIU. For the season, the Miami (Fla.) transfer is averaging 18.9 points, 10.0 rebounds and shooting 54% from the floor. Marshall has won three consecutive conference games and has seven of their last 10 overall after starting the season 0-6.
Maya Hawkins, Rice
The junior guard posted 27 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in the Owls' triple-overtime 100-97 victory over North Texas on Sunday. She was poised and aggressive, scoring 6 points in the second overtime period. Earlier in the week she led the Owls to their first C-USA win, 49-48 against UTSA also in overtime, with 12 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals. The junior averaged 19 points over the two wins. Head coach Tina Langley has a quality leader in Hawkins as she looks to make Rice a contender in C-USA.
