Scoring hat trick, beating BC earns Merrimack's Hampus Gustafsson Player of the Week

The Hockey East title does indeed run through Merrimack.

Last week, heading into Friday's big matchup in Boston, all eyes were on Merrimack, which has owned Boston College and Boston University recently. But one thing Merrimack has been unable to do was win at BC.

Scratch that one off the list.

Hampus Gustafsson led the Warriors into No. 6 Boston College and stunned the Hockey East leaders 6-3 on Friday night on ASN, earning himself this week's Player of the Week honor.

Gustafsson, of Ljungby, Sweden, had a career-high five points with a hat trick and two assists in leading Merrimack to their first win in Conte Forum since 1997 — a stretch of 30 games. The hat trick was Merrimack's first in nearly six years.

The win also assured the Warriors their first unbeaten season in league play against both the Eagles (1-0-1) and Boston University (2-0-0) since joining Hockey East, as well as season series victories against both teams. The next-best year was in 2010-11, when Merrimack went 3-1-2 in the regular season against both schools.

Through 28 games, Gustafsson remains Merrimack's leading scorer with 14 goals; he is six goals clear of the next-closest skater, and he ranks second in overall scoring with 24 points and plus/minus (+9).
