COMMENTARY | Belmont's Rick Byrd should be in the hall of fame

I admire coach Rick Byrd at Belmont.

Byrd has amassed more than 750 career wins. Belmont has won 16 conference championships (nine regular season, seven tournament) since 2006. Only Kansas and Gonzaga have won more over that span.

Belmont has won 20+ games and made postseason play 11 of the last 12 years (including 2016-17). Belmont appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015. Since 2000-01, Belmont basketball leads the nation in Academic All-Americans with 14 and that includes Evan Bradds and Craig Bradshaw in 2015-16. Bradds will probably make it (15) in 2017.

Rick Byrd is not in the Hall of Fame.

I so admire coaches like Byrd who win and produce such fine young men and always are in control of their program.

There are coaches who take short cuts to win. That is a fact. There are hall of fame coaches who know nothing about their team off the court but everything about their team on the court. Rick Byrd knows about his players both on and off the court and the results are truly hall of fame results!

Stop insulting fans like me who know a hall of fame leader, coach, teacher, mentor and man of integrity when we see one.

His name is Rick Byrd and I demand that the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame induct coach Rick Byrd of Belmont now!
