BEYOND THE ARC | VCU wins without miracles this week

Some observations from a week of college basketball...

Miracle Workers

VCU didn’t need a miracle as JeQuan Lewis scored 27 points and VCU beat Davidson 74-60 on Saturday night in a ho hum victory. After miracle back-to-back wild-finish wins at Saint Bonaventure and George Washington it's hard not the feel like a miracle worker. Pope Francis will review coach Will Wade’s resume at a later date.

Road Warriors

Liberty (12-2 Big South) is now 7-0 in Big South road games this season. The Flames won on the road at Gardner-Webb 92-87 and now we head to the middle of February with the Flames and Bulldogs tied for the conference lead. Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz had 28 points for the flames fifth straight win.

Delaware makes the record books - TWICE!

UNC Wilmington went 21-of-32 from 3-point range against Delaware last Saturday, tying the CAA record for threes in a game set by Northeastern (21-of-33) vs. Delaware on Jan. 5. That is unbelievable.

La Tech in great company

Since February 2012 La Tech has the fifth best home-winning percentage in the NCAA at 95.1%. Only Arizona, Stephen F. Austin, Kansas and Wichita State have better winning percentages. The Bulldogs were good on the road as well. In the final 13 seconds of the game, Eric McCree had a block, made two free throws and grabbed the final rebound to finish with 25 points and 9 boards in a 72-66 win at UTSA. LaTech also won at what was a hot UTEP earlier in the week.

Princeton continues to roll the Ivy

The Tigers are 8-0 as Spencer Weisz dropped 22 points while tallying a career-best six threes to lead the Tigers to their 11th straight win. They beat Penn, 64-49, on Tuesday and then followed that up with a win over Cornell 69-60 as Weisz again delivered with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Princeton then won at home 61-59 over Columbia behind Steven Cook’s 19 points. Yale and Harvard both have two losses.

Let's play three games in a row

It took four overtimes, but Wofford beat Samford 131-127! Eric Garcia continues his hot streak with 31 points and 10 assists in a wild 4OT game in the Southern Conference. Fletcher Magee had 36.
