Colgate, Wisconsin goalies net ASN's Hockey Players of the Week
While several shutouts were pitched across college hockey again this past weekend, we settled on goalies Matt Jurusik of Wisconsin and Ashlynne Rando of Colgate as ASN’s Players of the Week.
Jurusik, a 6-2, 193-pound freshman, turned back 29 of 30 shots in a 3-1 road win at top-ranked North Dakota this past Friday. He followed it up with a 35-save performance in Saturday’s 3-1 loss that saw UND score two late goals to escape with a split against the pesky Badgers.
Can you say "Signature Win?" Wisconsin won just four games last season and its only other wins this season came against the new Arizona State hockey program. It was UND’s first loss of the season, snapped its 17-game non-conference unbeaten streak and its 12-game home unbeaten streak.
With Jurusik, the Badgers have found a goalie who is used to winning. Last year, he backstopped the NAHL’s Janesville Jets to a league-record 100 points, leading that developmental league with 33 wins and 1.57 goals-against average. Through eight games for the Badgers, he’s carrying a 2.66 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage for the rejuvenated 3-3-2 program.
Rando, a 5-9 senior from Sugarland, Texas, stopped all 44 shots she faced against seventh-ranked Quinnipiac in a scoreless road tie on Friday night and followed it up with 29 saves in a 3-2 loss to 10th-ranked Princeton.
Colgate, 4-2-4, is one of the younger teams in the ECAC with eight freshmen and seven sophomores playing significant roles. Rando has a 2.09 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage in posting a 3-2-3 record.
