Big South honor roll: Stacia Robertson named player of year

High Point's Stacia Robertson has been selected the Big South's women’s basketball player of the year in voting by the conference coaches.

The 6-2 redshirt senior forward from Grand Island, Neb., is High Point’s first player of the year recipient since 2005-06. She received three first-place votes and 133 total points, ahead of Coastal Carolina’s A.J. Jordan, who received two first-place votes and 127 total points.

Robertson by the numbers:

  • 10.7: Rebounds per game, first in the conference.

  • 4.75: Offensive rebounds per game, first in the conference.

  • 55.6: Field-goal percentage, first in the conference and 14th in the nation.

  • 15.8: Points per game, third in the conference.

  • 3.5: Blocks per game, second in the conference and 12th in the nation.

  • 2.4: Steals per game, fifth in the Big South.

  • 13: Double-doubles, second in the conference and 28th in the nation.

Other Big South women's basketball honorees:


Mike McGuire, Radford: McGuire led the Highlanders to a 14-6 conference record and the No. 2 seed in the Big South Women’s Basketball Championship after being selected ninth in the preseason poll. RU opened the season with a 3-8 record, but won eight of their next nine games from Dec. 30-Jan. 27. Radford won each of their last eight conference home games in 2014-15. McGuire is the Highlanders’ first Coach of the Year honoree since 2010-11. He received six of a possible 10 first-place votes and earned 24 total points. Liberty’s Carey Green finished second in the voting with four first-place votes and 20 total points.


Cortney Storey, Presbyterian guard: Storey averaged 9.0 points, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.4 three-point field goals made per game this season. The 5-6 Fayetteville, Tenn. native led all Big South freshmen in assists per game, steals per game and assist to turnover ratio (1.15). She ranked ninth overall in the conference in assists per game, 10th in steals per game and tied for 11th in three-point field goals made per game. Storey won back-to-back Freshman of the Week awards in February and set a school Division I record for points in a game with 27 against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 10. She earned four first-place votes and 33 total points, ahead of CCU guard Jas Adams, who received two first-place votes and 29 total points.


Schaquilla Nunn, Winthrop junior center: Nunn ranked first in the conference and ninth nationally in blocks per game with 4.1. She pulled down a league-leading 6.7 defensive rebounds per game and finished second in total rebounds per game with 10.5. The 6-3 center from Fayetteville, Ga. averaged 13.6 points per game -- good for sixth in the Big South -- and shot 51.3 percent from the field, ranking fourth in the conference. Nunn paced the league with 14 double-doubles this season, which ranked 21st in the nation. She received three first-place votes to become Winthrop’s first Defensive Player of the Year honoree. Campbell’s Kiera Gaines and High Point’s Stacia Robertson finished tied for second in the voting.


Ashley Rininger, Liberty redshirt-junior forward/center: As voted by the league’s sports information directors. Rininger, a 6-4 Canton, Ohio native, received her second consecutive scholar-athlete of the year award. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice after just three years on campus. Rininger currently boasts a 4.0 graduate GPA as she pursues a master’s degree in human services counseling with a focus in crisis response and trauma. She averaged 13.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this season while shooting 54.8 percent from the field.
