A former backup quarterback at Oregon, Morgan Mahalak made the decision earlier this year to depart the Ducks and head east to join CAA Football’s Towson Tigers. The Tigers compete in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA.
Mahalak is a largely unknown quantity. The right-hander will arrive in Towson this summer as a redshirt sophomore after spending his redshirt freshman campaign directing Oregon’s scout team offense. He did not take a live snap from center during his two years in Eugene.
Mahalak conveyed via Twitter in March, “Excited to announce I am furthering my career at Towson University. Very excited for this next chapter of my life and extremely thankful to the Ambrose brothers for this opportunity.”
He's just one former FBS player hoping to find success in FCS.
Former Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk, who was dismissed from the team in January will play his final season of NCAA eligibility at Eastern Kentucky.
EKU athletics spokesman Kevin Britton confirmed to The Associated Press that Mauk will play for the Colonels after going 17-5 during three seasons as the Tigers' starter and leading them to consecutive Eastern Division titles in the SEC. He will have one season of eligibility remaining with the Colonels.
Mauk, graduated from Missouri in May and will be eligible immediately as a graduate-student transfer. He will compete with returning starter and senior Bennie Coney, who had the second-most passing yards in school history (2,471) and threw 23 touchdown passes last season.
Eastern Kentucky has been a successful home for second chances. Noah Spence, who transferred to EKU after being being suspended at Ohio State, was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 39th pick in this year's NFL Draft.
