Upsetting the SEC balance: ICYMI, The Citadel scores a stunner and FAU nearly does

In cased you missed it Saturday:

  • Upset alert! A week after losing to Chattanooga, The Citadel stunned everyone on Saturday with an upset win over SEC opponent South Carolina, 23-20. This seems like déjà vu for the two teams as the Bulldogs upset the Gamecocks in 1990. South Carolina could not handle the triple-option that produced 350 yards rushing, including Tyler Renew's 56-yard touchdown with 6:07 remaining.

  • Conference USA's Florida Atlantic took on in-state foe and SEC East champion Florida, the nation's eighth-ranked team, and nearly won. The Owls were just 2-8 coming into the game, but sent the game into a shocking overtime with the game tied at 14. The Gators ended up grabbing the final touchdown to seal the deal in OT after stopping FAU on fourth down in OT.

  • Western Kentucky continued to prove its dominance this season in Conference USA with a 63-7 win over Florida International. The win marked a new program record of nine FBS wins and the nation's second-longest conference win streak at 10. The Hilltoppers will advance to the C-USA championship game on Dec. 5 with a victory Friday against Marshall.

  • Richmond claimed its fourth-straight Capital Cup and clinched the CAA's automatic berth into the FCS playoffs with a 20-9 victory against Virginia rival William & Mary. Spiders running back Jacobi Green ran for 218 yards against William & Mary to put his rushing total for the season at 1,285 yards. James Madison beat Villanova 38-29 to earn a three-way share of the CAA crown with Richmond and William & Mary.

  • Middle Tennessee running back Desmond Anderson was released from Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., after he who was carried off the field on a stretcher. He was injured in the fourth quarter on his first carry of the Blue Raiders' 41-7 victory against North Texas. He was down on the field for at least 10 minutes.

  • MTSU's Brent Stockstill set the C-USA single-season freshman record for passing yards with 3,129 yards this season, also a school record.
