Less than a year after open-heart surgery, Ricky Santiago is back on the field as captain of Florida Atlantic's baseball team and helping the Owls to one of the best seasons in school history — a 35-11 record (17-7 in Conference USA), top-25 rankings in Division I polls and No. 8 in RPI.
"I just wanted to get back to living my everyday life," said Santiago, 22, who is third on the Owls with a .328 batting average and a team-leading 17 doubles. "Getting back to baseball was great because I couldn't stop thinking about it when I was in surgery. When someone takes it away from you, you realize how lucky you are to have it."
