Katie Rooney, Michael Brodzinski score Player of the Week honors

It isn’t exactly a case of the meek inheriting the earth, but for a weekend Michael Brodzinski of Minnesota and Katie Rooney of Rensselaer ranked among the top scorers in the nation.

Both juniors had the best scoring outputs of their careers to earn ASN Hockey Player of the Week honors.

Rooney had four goals and eight assists in 66 games over her first two seasons at RPI , but the junior forward scored twice and added two assists in Friday’s 6-2 win over Brown.

RPI, 8-11-4, had its game against Yale on Saturday postponed because of the blizzard. The teams are slated to meet Tuesday.

Her 14 points on the season already double her career high of seven as a freshman, and her two game-winning goals are tied for the lead. She has nine points (6 goals, 3 assists) in ECAC play leads the Engineers.

Brodzinki scored all three of his goals in the third period of Saturday’s rout 9-2 rout over Wisconsin on Saturday and added an assist in Friday’s 4-0 shoutout. It was his first career hat trick. When was the last time he had a hat trick? "Pee Wees, maybe," he said.

The nine goals Minnesota scored tied for third most ever against the Badgers and led to the Gophers’ first sweep in Madison since 2006. His assist came in Friday’s shutout.

Through 23 games Brodzinski has seven goals and eight assists, eclipsing last year’s totals of four goals and 10 assists in 36 games. His three goals marked the first time a Gophers defenseman has scored a hat trick since Mike Vannelli did it on Jan. 20, 2007 against Denver in a 5-4 win.

Brodzinski is the 141st overall selection (fifth round) of the 2013 NHL draft of the San Jose Sharks and the younger brother of Jonny Brodzinski, who played three years at St. Cloud State before joining the Los Angeles Kings. The brothers were taken in the same round in the same draft — Jonny seven picks behind Michael.

Minnesota is now 13-10-0 and 8-2-0 in the Big Ten.
