Landslide! Female kicker April Goss wins ASN’s FBS Player of the Week

Goss, the Kent State kicker who became the second women to score in a major college football game, won in a virtual landslide with 79% of 364 votes cast on

The fifth-year senior was mobbed by teammates after making an extra point that put the Golden Flash ahead 29-6 during a 45-13 victory against Delaware State. She joined Kate Hnida, who kicked a pair of extra points for New Mexico in 2003, as the only women to score in a major college football game.

ASN_April_Goss“I felt like I blacked out a little bit when I kicked it,” she said on Kent State’s web site.

Now what can she do for another encore? With Kent State a 24-point underdog Saturday against Minnesota, Goss might get another chance to kick.

“I would love another chance,” she said via Fox Sports. “But what I’d like more is for us to make it to a bowl game and win, that would be more special.”

The FBS nominees also included Western Kentucky’s Brandon Doughty, Toledo’s Phillip Ely and Bowling Green’s Matt Johnson.

  • Doughty, a redshirt senior quarterback threw for 441 yards on 28-of-38 passing with a 37-yard touchdown to lead the Hilltoppers to their seventh consecutive victory, 41-38 against Louisiana Tech in a battle of Conference USA’s preseason division favorites. Doughty also won statistical battle with Bulldogs quarterback and Florida transfer Jeff Driskel, who was 28 of 48 for 357 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Ely, a senior quarterback threw for 237 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rockets’ 16-12 upset win against No. 18 Arkansas, their first victory over a Southeastern Conference team. It also earned the Rockets votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. It was Ely’s second win against the Razorbacks. The Alabama transfer completed 2 of 3 passes for 15 yards off the bench in the Crimson Tide’s 52-0 victory three years ago in Fayetteville, Ark.
  • For the second consecutive week, Johnson, a redshirt senior quarterback threw for a career-high in yards as the Falcons knocked off Maryland, 48-27. Johnson passed for 491 yards and leads the nation with 915 after two weeks. He also threw for six touchdowns, including four in the fourth quarter as Bowling Green piled up 692 yards against a Big Ten opponent. Roger Lewis caught 15 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns.
