With less than a month to Selection Sunday, conference play is heating up and this week’s men’s Player of the Week, Louisiana Tech’s Erik McCree, led the way in two big Conference USA victories against top contenders. James Madison’s Angela Mickens was named women’s player of the week.
Thursday night, McCree led La Tech to a 73-63 victory against Middle Tennessee State with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He followed that up with a career-high 33 points and six rebounds against league-leading UAB in an 85-76 win.
McCree’s 33 points are the most scored by a Bulldog since 2007. For the week Eric shot 56% from the field, 81% from inside the arc and 81% from the free-throw line.
With the two wins La Tech moved up to fourth in C-USA.
Mickens, a senior guard, averaged 16 points and 4.5 assists as the Dukes got victories over Drexel and Hofstra.
Mickens is vital to the Dukes’ engine as seen on ASN on Sunday. Mickens can score but also does a great job of involving her teammates and finding them in their money spots. Mickens and Jaz Gwauthmey make for a mean two headed monster for Kenny Brooks.
