They’ve been playing for the honor since Temple head coach Matt Rhule brought back the tradition in 2013.

Rhule was an assistant under former Temple head coach Al Golden, who assigned jersey numbers 1 through 9 to the toughest players on the roster.

Upperclassmen loved it, so this week, Rhule turned back the clock, bringing it back.

“It’s just sort of a rite of passage for those guys,” Rhule said. “Its something they’ve earned and they wear it.”

And they wear it with pride.
