Inspired by a great city, UIC tennis player Mitch Granger feeds homeless

UIC’s Mitch Granger had a simple, yet audacious plan: feed Chicago’s homeless. The UIC tennis player founded SPARK — Students Performing Random Acts of Kindness, which has taken off in just over a year on the UIC campus.

“We weren’t doing enough to give back to Chicago,” Granger said. “We wanted to find an easy and effective way to make a change in people’s lives, so we said why not start with feeding the homeless.”

Since SPARK’s inception, the program has raised nearly $4,000 and grown to more than 50 volunteers. The group meets on a weekly basis to assemble and package meals and then deliver those meals to Chicago’s homeless.
