Honors College: CC goalie, BC forward earn Hockey Player of Week recognition

ASN-Jacob-Nehama-POWJacob Nehama had the type of weekend that defies statistics.

Ranked 69th out of 79 goalies in men’s Division I college hockey, the freshman looked like the second coming of Patrick Roy in backstopping Colorado College to a weekend split against high-powered St. Cloud State.

His 81 saves over the weekend has him sharing ASN Hockey Player of the Week honors with Boston College’s Haley Skarupa, who scored all four goals against cross-town rival Boston University women’s hockey team to keep the Eagles unbeaten.

Nehama was nearly impassible against the fourth-ranked Huskies, who rank third in scoring (4.3 goals per game) and on the power play (28 percent). None of that mattered over the weekend, as Tehama stymied them at nearly every turn and helped CC kill off eight of nine penalties in Friday’s 2-1 loss and Saturday’s 5-2 win when he made 47 saves.

Colorado College (5-17) is now 5-4 in its last nine games and 3-10 in games decided by two goals or less. Saturday’s road win was the Tigers’ first under coach Mike Haviland in his two years as head coach. Tehama is now 5-10-0 on the season with a 3.37 goals-against and a .905 save percentage.

Haley-Skarupa-POWWhere Nehama’s performance may have surprised some, Skarupa’s four goals in a 4-3 in over BU seem to be par for the course.

Through 21 games for the 21-0 Eagles, Skarupa has 20 goals and 21 assists (2.05 points per game) to rank fourth in the nation in scoring. She now has four game-winning goals, four power-play goals an one shorthanded goal this season.

The senior forward has played 128 games for the top-ranked Eagles and tallied 98 goals and 110 assists. She is a 2015 draft pick of the National Women’s Hockey League’s New York Riveters, who picked her first in the third round.
