ICYMI: Doughty, Dixon make history and Southern Miss hauls in division title

In cased you missed it this weekend:

  • Western Kentucky's Brandon Doughty became the first quarterback in NCAA Division I history with consecutive seasons of more than 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns passing. WKU's 49-28 win against Marshall on Friday also solidified a spot for them in the Conference USA championship game against Southern Miss.

  • Louisiana Tech lost to Southern Miss on Saturday, but Bulldogs running back Kenneth Dixon tied the NCAA record for career touchdowns with 83, equaling Wisconsin's Montee Ball and Navy's Kennan Reynolds.

  • Ito Smith deserves a lot of the credit for USM's victory. He scored three rushing touchdowns over a 45-second span in the fourth quarter to lead Southern Miss to a 58-24 victory. He rushed for a career-high 169 yards on 22 carries and scored three times. This all took place during the first play of a drive following a Louisiana Tech turnover.

  • Colgate had a big day in the first-round of the FCSpPlayoffs against New Hampshire with a 27-20 win. That marks the first victory for a Patriot League team against a CAA team in the FCS playoffs since Lehigh won at Towson in the 2011 second round. They advance to play No. 5 ranked James Madison in the second round.

  • Chattanooga, The Citadel, Sam Houston State and William & Mary also advanced to the the second round of the FCS playoffs.
