Dave Fairbank is a freelance writer who lives in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., where he dodges hurricanes and redistributes sand. He began writing for ASN in the fall of 2015, following a newspaper career that stalled badly. He spent almost 31 years at the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press before leaving the paper in the summer of 2015.
Dave was recognized by the Virginia Press Association numerous times and won two APSE national awards, remarkable given the fact that he knows very little about journalism. He grew up just south of Annapolis, Md., and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1980 with a general studies degree, which means that he has no useful skills or qualifications. He chose newspapers and writing because it seemed like an appealing alternative to starvation.
These days, he kicks around on North Carolina's Outer Banks with his wife and dog, figuring out what he wants to do when he grows up. He reads and writes and listens to music -- he's partial to blues and old jazz -- and is still easily distracted by shiny objects.
