Should win conference: Louisiana Tech

Dark horse: UAB

Who else might get in: Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, UTEP

Why I chose Louisiana Tech: Conference USA is a top-heavy league.  ODU has some solid out-of-conference top 20 wins.  Their backcourt of Aaron Bacote and Trey Freeman is the best in the conference.  But I’m not sure they are ready to win three games in a row in the tournament.  To me Louisiana Tech is the most talented team in the conference by far.  They are virtually unbeatable in Ruston, La., but also can be somewhat underwhelming at times on the road.

Should win conference: Louisiana Tech

Dark horse: UT San Antonio

Who else might get in: UTEP has the length and size to cause any team problems but they won’t have the home court advantage for this year’s tournament. The Miners didn’t play well at home against the Bulldogs and I am sure they would love a rematch in Birmingham.

Why I chose Louisiana Tech: La. Tech has consistently been the best team in C-USA and to this point, has been able to navigate away from the losses that have plagued a few of the teams chasing them. It is time for Mike White to get that trip to the NCAA.

Should win conference: Louisiana Tech

Dark horse: ODU

Who else might get in: If ODU or Louisiana Tech lose the championship game they could get an at-large berth.

Why I chose Louisiana Tech: La. Tech is experienced and senior laden. Award-winners across veteran lineup (Smith, Kyser, Appleby as good as any at their position in CUSA).  This should be a breakthrough for coach Michael White and program after knocking hard at the championship door to NCAA last few years.

Why I chose Davidson: The Blazers have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in conference play, and will snag C-USA’s lone bid while feasting on home cooking. The C-USA tourney is at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center, site of some of the program’s biggest win’s ever. Just ask ODU coach Jeff Jones, whose Virginia team with Ralph Sampson lost to the Blazers in the ’82 Sweet 16.
