Sarah Nurse's 3 goals scores Women's Player of the Week honors

The biggest regular-season games in women’s college hockey lately seem to be the Border Battle between Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams didn’t disappoint this past weekend, splitting the series in front of two sellout crowds at Labahn Arena in Madison, Wis.

The second-ranked Gophers took the series opener 2-0 on Friday, but top-ranked Wisconsin answered in huge fashion on Saturday behind Sarah Nurse’s three goals and assist in an 8-2 rout, the most lopsided score in the heated series in recent years.

Nurse is ASN’s Player of the Week for her efforts.

She now leads the Badgers with 15 goals and 8 assists and in shots on goal with 86.

Nurse comes from an athletic family. Her cousin Darnell Nurse was drafted in the seventh round by the Edmonton Oilers in 2013 and she’s the niece of former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles and NCAA basketball player Raquel McNabb.

She led Wisconsin last season with 25 goals and 13 assists.

More than 2,273 fans turned out each game to watch the Border Battle showdown. Wisconsin moves to 14-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in the WCHA. Minnesota lost for the first time and is 14-2-1 overall and 10-2-1-1 in WCHA play.

Friday’s loss was Wisconsin’s first of the season with Ann-Renee Desbiens in net. She had missed the previous four games with an upper body injury. The Badgers travel to Ohio State this weekend.
