CCU stuns TCU 7-5, advances to CWS championship series

Coastal Carolina will play for the first NCAA championship in school history after beating TCU 7-5 Saturday night in the College World Series.

The Chanticleers (53-17) avoided elimination for the third consecutive day, beating No. 5 Texas Tech on Thursday and TCU on Friday and Saturday, to win their bracket. The Chanticleers also defeated No. 1 Florida 2-1 in their CWS opener.

"None of this has hit me yet," said CCU head coach Gary Gilmore. "It's kind of like I'm in a dream. I'm afraid to pinch myself. It's one of the most incredible things I can imagine, I don't know if I ever dreamt about getting this far."

CCU will play Arizona in the best-of-three championship series starting Monday at 7 p.m. ET. Game 2 is Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET and Game 3, if necessary, is Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

With the victory Coastal Carolina became the winningest team in Division I this season, pounding out 12 hits, including a home run, three doubles and a triple.

Anthony Marks and Tyler Chadwick each had three hits, while Zach Remillard and Connor Owings each had two. Owings and G.K. Young also contributed two RBI each as CCU led 7-1 after four innings.

The Chanticleers also turned three double plays, including one to end the game after TCU cut in the lead to 7-5 on a double by Dane Steinhagen and a single by Ryan Merrill.

"They amaze everyday I go out there," Gilmore said. "Every single day they find ways to win. Can't be happier for a group of young men."

Alex Cunningham, who lost to TCU 6-1 on Tuesday, pitched 6.1 innings, scattered eight hits and allowed four runs for his 10th victory this season. He struck out three, including two key punch-outs in the fourth inning, and walked one. Overall, he threw 87 pitches, 59 for strikes.

"I want to be the guy everyone can depend on," Cunningham said. "I want to be the rock for this team. It's really easy to go out there and throw when your offense is scoring 6, 7 runs a game. I really just wanted to do it for them."
