ASN’s Sweet 16: Final poll of this season’s NCAA hockey elite

Ice hockey under the lights

To wrap up ASNs inaugural season of college hockey coverage we expanded our Elite Eight to a Sweet 16.

No, it doesn’t exactly match other polls or the NCAA Tournament field.

Nor should it.

Our rankings are based on the top 16 teams overall.

Without question, we give Quinnipiac the nod at No. 1. The Bobcats enter the NCAA Tournament as the top seed and have been the most consistent team in the country since the puck dropped this season.

New season starts Friday. Thanks for following along.

ASNs Sweet 16

ecac-quinnipiac1. QUINNIPIAC

Record: 29-3-7 | Conference: ECAC

They’ve been at their best when pressed. Injury status of leading scorer Sam Anas looms large.

nchc-stcloudstate2. ST. CLOUD STATE

Record: 31-8-1 | Conference: NCHC

Leads the country in wins and has the best defenseman in the nation in Ethan Prow.

nchc-northdakota3. NORTH DAKOTA

Record: 30-6-4 | Conference: NCHC

Gunning for third straight Frozen Four despite never winnig its conference tournament. Has toughest first-round draw in facing Northeastern.

nchc-denver4. DENVER

Record: 23-9-6 | Conference: NCHC

0-3 against St. Cloud State — and a rematch looms if they each win their semifinals in the West Region.

Providence College5. PROVIDENCE

Record: 27-6-4 | Conference: Hockey East

Displayed heart of a champion in 3OT loss to UMass Lowell, but uphill battle without services of injured sophomore star defenseman Jake Walman.

bigten-michigan6. MICHIGAN

Record: 24-7-5 | Conference: Big Ten

One line of Hobey Baker Award finalists, one of the best defensemen (Zach Werenski) in the game and two more lines that could be tops anywhere else. Offense rules, but can it win a national title?

hockeyeast-uml7. UMASS LOWELL

Record: 24-9-5 | Conference: Hockey East

Second-ranked defense in the nation, but meets Yale’s No. 1 defense in Northeast Region semifinal.

hockeyeast-northeastern8. NORTHEASTERN

Record: 22-13-5 | Conference: Hockey East

Would make Aerosmith proud with how they’ve handled Living on the Edge during second-half surge. Hottest team in nation rides a 14-game win streak.

hockeyeast-bostoncollege9. BOSTON COLLEGE

Record: 26-7-5 | Conference: Hockey East

Defense struggled in conference tourney, but with Jake Walman out for Providence the Eagles still look like an extra No. 1 seed in the Northeast Region.

nchc-minnesotaduluth10. MINNESOTA DULUTH

Record: 18-15-5 | Conference: NCHC

Party crashers in East Region are finally healthy and riding a hot goalie in Kasimir Kaskisuo into showdown with Providence.

ecac-yale11. YALE

Record: 19-8-4 | Conference: ECAC

Sweated out wait for at-large berth on Sunday, but now rested and hoping to ride its own hot goalie, Alex Lyon, to the Promised Land.

ecac-harvard12. HARVARD

Record: 19-10-4 | Conference: ECAC

Crimson can score with Hobey candidate Jimmy Vesey and power play leading the way, but their run comes down to team defense.

hockeyeast-bostonuniversity13. BOSTON UNIVERSITY

Record: 21-12-5 | Conference: Hockey East

Beat Denver, its West Region foe, 5-4 in overtime in October and has the talent to win it all, but missing the consistency

hockeyeast-notredame14. NOTRE DAME

Record: 19-10-7 |  Conference: Hockey East

Can’t think of a better way to make a power statement than to knock off bitter rival Michigan in the Midwest Region semifinals.

wcha-ferrisstate15. FERRIS STATE

Record: 19-14-4 | Conference: WCHA

Knocked off both co-league champions to advance; held Minnesota State to 14 shots on goal in conference title game.

Record: 23-9-5 | Conference: WCHA

The only team in our Sweet 16 not to make the NCAA Tournament. A victim of league’s poor record vs. other conferences but one of best teams in the country.
