It was quite a 1-2 punch St. Lawrence and Denver delivered to the top teams in last week’s ASN Elite Eight poll, and neither former No. 1 Quinnipiac nor No. 2 North Dakota withstood the shots.
The Bobcats dropped to No. 3 in the rankings after St. Lawrence handed Quinnipiac its first ECAC loss on Friday, 4-3 in overtime. On Saturday, the Bobcats did what they do best, rallying for a wild, 3-2 overtime victory against Clarkson on Devon Toews’ game-winner with just 21 ticks of the clock remaining in overtime.
North Dakota wasn’t as fortunate. UND was swept on the road for the first time since November 2011 and dropped to fourth in the ASN Elite Eight. The Pioneers (15-8-5) are 8-1-3 since Jan. 1.
To decide this week’s No. 1 we searched the power rankings, scoured the box scores and researched the standings.
Then we flipped a coin.
Our scientific finding gave the nod to St. Cloud State over Boston College.
Seriously, the Huskies are No. 2 in PairWise and have a key NCHC series this weekend at surging Omaha.
BC is riding a 12-game unbeaten streak (8-0-4) to start 2016 and was just 55 seconds away from a weekend sweep when Merrimack’s Jonathan Lashyn tied the game at 5 after the team pulled its goalie for a sixth attacker.
It was an interesting weekend of games, and it’s just getting better.
Keep an eye on Yale-St. Lawrence, Denver-Colorado College Thursday on ASN and Notre Dame-Providence this weekend, and that’s just for starters.
If the Fighting Irish can hold off Providence, just three points behind in Hockey East, we will become true believers.
